Uchawan Bamboo Chasen – 120-Prong Matcha Whisk (Light Bamboo)

Why do you need a chasen?

A chasen is essential for preparing matcha the way it’s meant to be enjoyed. Its finely carved bamboo tines blend the powder with water into a smooth, creamy bowl of tea, creating the light foam and balanced texture that a spoon or metal whisk simply can’t achieve. It lets the matcha fully open in flavor, giving you the authentic taste, aroma, and experience of traditional Japanese tea preparation.

    CHASEN 茶筅

Hand-carved from a single piece of sturdy, flexible bamboo, this chasen is designed to blend matcha powder with hot water into a smooth, balanced froth. Subtle differences in colour and shape naturally occur depending on the bamboo type and number of prongs.

A 120-prong whisk like this one is traditionally used for preparing usucha (thin matcha), where a finer, lighter foam is desired. Japanese tea schools vary in their preferred whisk styles depending on the season and ceremony.

This piece offers the refined control needed for everyday premium matcha preparation.

    CHASEN CARE

Before making matcha, place the chasen in warm water for a few minutes so the bamboo softens and the tines open naturally. When you start whisking, keep the whisk in the center of the chawan rather than scraping the sides, as this helps it keep its shape and prevents the tines from breaking. After preparing your tea, rinse the chasen in warm water until all the matcha is washed away. Shake off the excess water and let it dry in open air. If you have a whisk stand, place the chasen on it so the tines maintain their proper rounded form. If you do not have a stand, leave it to dry with the bristles pointing downward to prevent moisture from settling inside the handle. If mould ever appears, a short dip in boiling water will clean it, but make sure it dries completely afterward.
